University for the Creative Arts

UCA

The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is one of the UK's leading providers of specialist art and design education, offering strengths in art, design, architecture, media and communication. For the Creative Campus Initiative, UCA will be presenting eight projects spread across its five campuses.

The projects will predominantly focus on contemporary visual and participatory arts and will be presented within UCA gallery spaces across the campuses as well as in situ where projects happen.

Animation: Research and Concept and Script and Screen

When: 15 July-7 August
Farnham Animation students will be invited to make a short animation in response to the themes of the CCI. Students will attend seminars delivered by (among others) Leo Mason, sports photographer and Quadratura, immersive audio/visual installation artists.

The Big Swim

A live event in which participants experience swimming in a cloud of light and colours based on the five Olympics colours: blue, yellow, purple, green and red. The Big Swim aims to encourage participatory art experiences and promote local community interest in swimming ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

A Widening Participation project where schoolchildren in Aldershot will be invited to participate in a series of sound workshops to record running participants, interview them and simple glassblowing techniques. The results will be put together to create a site-specific installation of glass bubble breaths and sound posts on a local running track.

Zadoc Nava's photographs and video installation about the growing number of women boxers in the UK. The accompanying text sheds light on their dreams, fears and aspirations. The project includes an impressionistic video of the women training, sparring and competing.

Farnham Film Production students will be invited to work on a portrait relating to one of the sports identified by the UCA Cultural Olympiad project. They will attend lectures and screenings by artist and documentary filmmakers working on the subject and awarded associated travel costs for their research and filming.

A Widening Participation project in Rochester, with 14-19 year olds, delivering a range of visual and communication arts workshops. In the light of London 2012, the project will highlight global, cultural, social and economic diversity in the 21st century and to dispel misguidance surrounding today's youth through intercultural, creative and interactive exchange.

Clearance: An Exhibition by Photography and Media Arts Students

Where: Maidstone Arts Festival
When: 13-15 May
Photography and Media Arts students at Maidstone will present a group project 'Clearance' in five empty shops in Maidstone town centre. Working with the themes of the CCI, an exhibition, events, performances and publication will be produced. Students are managing and developing all aspects of the project and have received a modest budget to take part in Maidstone Arts Festival.

Swandown: Ordinance and Surveying

Where: Across the South-East, from Hastings to London (walks), James Hockey Gallery, Farnham (exhibition)
When: 15 July-7 August (exhibition)
Accompanied by the psychogeographer and writer Iain Sinclair, Andrew Kotting will conduct a series of walks to produce a map as a prelude to a journey from Swan Lake in Hastings to the Angel Islington in London over a month; an unbroken 200 miles from the English Channel into the heart of London through the Olympic Territory.
